PVD Coating Design Rules
Coating Thickness and Tolerances
A PVD coating is very thin, so it changes part dimensions far less than powder coating or paint. Flag any fit that is tight enough for a thin film to matter.
Line of Sight
PVD coats the surfaces that are exposed inside the coating chamber. Deep recesses, blind holes and internal channels receive little or no coating, so keep coated surfaces open and accessible.
Surface Finish Under the Coating
Because the film is so thin, it takes on the finish of the surface underneath. A polished surface stays glossy, a textured surface stays textured, and scratches remain visible.
Masking and Fixture Points
Parts are held on fixtures in the chamber, and each contact point is left uncoated. Mark any surface that must stay bare, and tell us which surfaces are cosmetic so fixture points can be placed elsewhere.
